So which is worse for you? If you think it’s fats then you can blame a guy called Ancel Keys. In the 1970 his monumentally flawed theory was adopted into US guidelines and the UK followed suit. So for decades fat has been labelled the 'bad guy' whilst processed sugars have been silently killing us off. However, in recent years research has shown that fat is no worse for us than sugar (carbohydrate). In fact diets that are low in carbohydrate and high in fat are now widely regarded as healthier than low fat, high carb diets. Particularly in terms of blood glucose control and weight loss.
So eliminating processed food that have both fat and sugar in them and opting to cook fresh food and adding your own ingredients is the way forward. Who adds sugar when cooking anyway? Yet all processed foods are crammed with it. Studies also show that low-carb diets are better for those with type 2 diabetes, so cutting carb portions down helps as well.
Also adding healthy fats such as avocado, coconut & olive oil, nuts & oily fish like salmon are essential for a healthy body and mind. So, processed foods out, bring in good fats and cut your carbs down.
